it was amazing
bookshelves: realism-naturalism, memoir, russian

Disturbing. In some ways, this book is actually better than Solzhenitsyn's stuff. Shalamov writes such short, concise stories that carry so much emotional punch. There is even one story that is only one paragraph long that is more disturbing than an entire novel. I love Shalamov, especially for his aesthetics.

Robert Kiehn Solzhenitsyn is a great author and wrote many great books esp. The Gulag Archipelago books I-VII which inspired other survivors of Stalin's regime to write their own books I think, and he has a good sense of humor and irony plus sarcasm but sometimes his books are a bit hard to read.

Vladimir Stozhkov Not really. Shalamov criticized Solzhenitsyn a lot claiming that Solzhenitsyn hadn't understood the life in a Soviet labor camp. Also, many Russian historians say that he overestimated the number of GULAG casualties in about 10 times.
