City of Ashes (The Mortal Instruments, #2)

Yes, I read the sequel to City of Bones, despite my declaration of mediocrity last time and my knowledge of author-bullying and plagerism. Why? Because a co-worker (who's a big fan) left her copy on my desk and wanted to hear updates on what I thought.
But, honestly, this series isn't too bad for a quick, mindless read....
...if you ignore a dumb-as-a-block mary sue protagonist.
...if you discount the other main character (who we're supposed to love?) is a complete asshole.
...if you accept that the author can't write romance without it feeling unnatural and awkward.
...if you gloss over the fact thatsome most parts of the world make no sense if actually thought about for 15 seconds
"When that spell was created, the spell to turn the Soul-Sword to darkness, the word 'teenager' hadn't even been invented. In Shadowhunter society, you're an adult when you're eighteen. Before that, you're a child."
That was the point I laughed out loud at the irrationality of this world. Where else you have someone point out that teenager is a made up word so it doesn't apply, and then in the next sentence use a modern convention of when someone is an adult? Especially, since its a warrior culture, the random 18 years old make absolutely no sense.
Oh, and if you can get over the continuing forays into incest territory.
I know my coworker is going to give me the third book to read and I'll read it because she's a nice person. And, who knows, since this book cleared up my annoyances with Simon (view spoiler) and there are characters who are interesting (although less prominently featured), maybe it'll clear up other gaping holes. Haha. Good one. Mocking-read it is. They only take me about 3-4 hours to read anyway.
Edit: Oh dear...there's 6 of these + spinoffs? We'll see how long I can last.
