did not like it

Sickening and horrific.

Idk how the author came up with such gruesome and grotesque ideas and mapped them out to maximize pain of the reader.

Theme of the book: life is an ultimately hopeless tragedy with no escape. At least In Cutting For Stone you are reminded that amidst the suffering that is human life there can be positive moments. This book was traumatizing to read and should come with some sort of warning label

Other thoughts:

Another central message was to be nostalgic about the present because it can always get worse and you’ll miss this stage. But how to be nostalgic about a current stage if that stage contains so much suffering and tragedy as well? Rejoice in the tragedy as it could always be worse? Are they really asking us to be happy in the face of genuine tragedy??

In some ways this is an important read, as it is important to know how despicable the humanitarian crises are throughout the world. But so graphic, so disempowering to the reader

To end on a kinder note, the writing itself was well done, in particular the dialogue. It was impressive to see the distinction in the ways characters spoke, and how this was sustained throughout hundreds of pages.
