really liked it
bookshelves: literary-fiction

I don't think I've ever read a novel where the language is so ornate and over-the-top: it works well, but it is too much at times.

Sarah Booth Your comment to Manny about some authors needing a cold shower and a lie down made me burst out laughing. I want to read this soon as someone who loves language I haven’t read much Updike at all, just The Witches of Eastwick and Owen Meaney. The former I read after seeing the movie which ruined the book for me, which is usually the other way around, and the latter which I enjoyed and contains scenes still vivid in my mind.
