Cien años de soledad

One of those classic Latin American books that I finally got around to reading. I have heard this described as a labyrinth of plots and a mesh of confusing characters. Yes, but I think that was the intention. After reading this book and then watching several holliwood drama's it became apparenbt that a story that takes places within the realm of one person, or in one generation was insufficient, dare I say, unsatisfactory.
Marquez novel, as the title suggests, takes place inside the frame of 100years, inside which, I am not mistaken, 4 generations live out the exercises of birth childhood, adolescence, infatuated love, exploration, meditation and death. There are much happenings per page, as a reader it is best that you let go of trying to remember everything that happens, (as is with life, which I suppose Marquez intended to suggest)the more important facts (or hechos) are not apparent when the occur but only later, sometimes after our passing. This novel has much wear and tear, the physical and the spiritual are heavily marked by time. [Interestingly, the copy I inherited from Seguismundo desintegrated in my hands (as did Los Detectives de Bola~no) and it is now likely unreadable:].What else?...
One might also read each generation as a season for there are periods marked by rain, drought, fertility and hibernation. Another theme of interest is in that the names as well as the fate of the family members repeat, a theme that Marquez calls to attention. I imagine this is true in all of our families for I am named after a paternal aunt, and a maternal great aunt, whom, in turn, inherited their names and possibly their fate, if you are to believe such things. Such thoughts are provoked by Marquez. This is a book to be shared with your parents. Goodread.
