Elinor Carlisle and her cousin and fiance Roderick have been counting on an inheritance from their aunt, but neither is in any hurry for the money. But when they receive an anonymous letter about a protege of their aunt's, they wonder if something should be done. They go to visit. And Roderick meets the girl in question, Mary Gerrard. Suddenly the engagement is in doubt, Aunt Laura's health takes a turn for the worse, and then things really get out of hand. It ends with Elinor on trial for murder. Only Hercule Poirot can save her now.
