After seeing countless five stars reviews on my goodreads feed and the extreme hype literally everywhere, I decided to give Fourth Wing a try to cure my FOMO.
One hundred pages in, and I was hooked. I loved the whole underdog plot and the coiling tension between Xaden and Violet (her nickname is literally so perfect!!!). Its the kind of book where you can't put it down as soon as you begin and the pages fly by until you're nearing the end. The dragons were fascinating and well-developed, the world interesting and unique. One of the best aspects of this book was the academy/training grounds. I really liked the academic setting and how the wings were separated.
I will say, one of the few ways this book fell short was the ending. It felt like an easy and predictable twist at the end to have Xaden "betray her".
It fell flat. I finished the book feeling slightly disappointed and cheated. It was the kind of thing that I have seen reused too many times in fantasy books. When Dain read her memories it wasn't a surprise. Even the final battle didn't keep my interest.
Despite the rushed ending, I nevertheless enjoyed this book. I liked how developed the side characters were and the connection between the dragons and their riders. The romance wasn't quiteee the enemies to lovers I was promised, but I was fine with it. Reading Violet's thoughts about how she needed to stop being attracted to toxic men was literally so funny. And I liked how Xaden helped her realise how she was being held back by Dain. It was humorous to see Xaden actually shove him aside when he was telling Violet that she "didn't have to use her powers" 🙄. I will happily join the Dain haters club.
The bottom line is, this was a booktok sensation that is worth the hype. Is it full of tropes and cliches?
Yes.
But is it enjoyable?
Absolutely!
