Read 3 times. Last read May 11, 2013 to May 14, 2013.

This was a far better fantasy than I recalled. It's really held up well & had all the elements needed to make it an excellent one; action, romance, & excellent attention to the realities of war, although the hyperbole factor was quite high. The best fighters were also the rulers, so they tended to continually put themselves in harm's way. Kind of silly, like Kirk & the command crew of the Enterprise, but fun.

While the world is one with magic, there are other dimensions of which ours is one, so a few characters, 2 of the main ones, are from our world. That added a lot to the story. Not everyone was good or bad, either. While Good & Evil were forces in the world, some people were occasionally jerks & got put in their place. Very well done.

I can't say I was in love with the reader, but he didn't ruin it either. It was a bit more of a production than I like. Different voices for each character & some were hard to hear, the voice was low. The Hightowers were great. They sounded like Sean Connery & made me think of Highlander, which fit perfectly.

There is a sequel to this story, The Starfollowers of Coramonde. I have it on audio & plan to listen to it soon.

Jeffrey an old favorite, read many times

Jim The narrator isn't thrilling me, but the story is holding up far better than I recall. I rated it as a 3 star, but I think it's better than that.

Jeffrey I read it as opposed to listened to it so cannot comment on narrator. There is a sequel, The Star followers of Coramonde.

Jim I still have both books, Jeffrey. Daley wrote some other fun books, too. Kind of like Alan Dean Foster.

Jeffrey Yes. Another favorite from the lighter ideas sf but better read division of the field. I also liked Daley's A Tapestry of Magic.

Jim I recall the Jinx books as a lot of fun.

Waldo Varjak The storyline sounds similar to Jerry “God Rest His Soul Pournelle’s Janissaries. The MacGuffin is different but the idea of bringing advanced earth technology in the hands of soldiers to a different world is the same. Have you read the incomplete Janissaries? How does this story stack up to it?

Jim I have read Janissaries & gave it a 3 star review here:

so I guess I liked this one better. They're not exactly alike, though. Janissaries was SF & this is fantasy.

Waldo Varjak Hi Jim. Thank you for a quick reply. Glad to see there are folks still here! The books sound similar. The book synopsis could have substituted soldiers from Viet Nam for mercenaries from the Congo led by Rick Galloway (as it reads - I've not read the book). As far as the other dispossessed earthlings go, in Janissaries, they may as well have been aliens such is the time travel concept The Internet proves.

I will check out your review for Janissaries, and probably add Doomfarers to my growing list of Potential Purchases. Much obliged for your review.

Jim Don't get your hopes up too much. Daley is a fast, serviceable, entertaining writer who did a lot of books from scripts & such, like Alan Dean Foster. They're entertaining - fun, but rarely filling. More of a dessert than an entree. In this case, the mix of characters & elements really tickled me.

Waldo Varjak Might be what the doctor ordered.
