I am having a hard time putting into words what I truly think and feel about this book.
While it recounts the struggles of adolescence and the cruelty that other children can sometimes possess, I have to agree with some other reviews here when they say that some of the depictions of violence is sometimes unjustified. I feel like the bigger picture gets lost in the extreme brutality that occurs repeatedly, almost to a point that I also feel that I’m being beaten over and over with the same violent scenarios.
Also, 14 olds do not talk like this. Unless they are absolutely insufferable and nihilistic reddit mods, but seeing as this took place in the early 90s, that kind of rules out that possibility.
Now contrary to everything I’ve said, I didn’t hate the novel, but something just felt missing to me. I’m not sure how to explain it.
