A delightful, short, and sad novel told from the perspective of a queer mountain lion living in the Hollywood Hills, near the Hollywood sign, on the edge of Griffith Park. Their character is obviously inspired by the real mountain lion--P-22--who lived in the park for years.
As short as it was, there is a lot that will stick with me. On July 8, 2023, GoodReads user David said it best:
"I read it...as a commentary on the meaning of queerness. The lion is free and yet confined, allowed to live as long as it doesn't transgress. It's labeled as a threat, even though it is the one being hunted. There's more to unpack with this, and even if Open Throat doesn't do a lot of unpacking, it illustrates these ideas in a fresh way."
Very well put.
