Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Harry Potter, #1)

how innocent little 11-year-old harry was...it's so sweet i could cry! i read sorcerer's stone when it was first released in the states 10 years ago. at the time, it didn't even pop up in the system at B&N (where i work/worked) and i had to special order it in from england. my mom had heard jk on npr reading the first chapter and wanted to get it for my friend as a christmas present. so i ordered it myself soon afterward and for the longest time i didn't even know anyone else who'd read it! but i have been a rabid -and proud- fan ever since. some adult readers of hp say that this book and chamber of secrets are not necessary to understand the plot, and/or too childish to get into, but to those people i say bugger off, you right foul gits! this book is where it all begins! how can you possibly understand where harry's coming from, if you don't...see where he's coming from? how can you get how...well, magical, magic really is, unless you visit hogwarts for the first time with harry? the movies are pretty faithful, but they don't hold a candle to the books, and that goes for all of them.
after you've read the series, it's impossible to go back to SS with the same perspective, but it's a prime opportunity to search for the foreshadowing and and namedropping and wordplay that jkr is so amazing at.
the HP series is a crack addiction, and SS is like the gateway drug! ;) just kidding of course...
things i love about book 1:
the innocence, lightness and humor
the dursleys fleeing from the owls
harry's happiness
meeting all the weasleys for the 1st time!
exploring hogwarts for the 1st time!
oliver wood!
norbert!
"nitwit! blubber! oddment! tweak!"
