it was ok

This was beautifully written with a confidently woven narrative darting between the past and present seamlessly. The setting of the cherry farm was romantic and evocative. However, all of this was not enough to keep me engaged in a storyline that I had no interest in. I did not care for the acting story that Lara was telling her daughters and grew bored with these bits of the novel. I enjoyed the relationships Lara has within her family but just didn't want to know more when it came to her past reminiscences.
This honest review is given with thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this book.

CanadianReader Melanie, I read her last book The Dutch House (the first Patchett I read right through) and found it very bland. I’d tried her in the past, but got nowhere.

message 2: by Lady Dakini (new) - added it

Lady Dakini There is far too much filler in almost every scene so much so that it verges on tangential to the point of losing where the story is going over and over again.

Constance Halfway through and so bored I feel like sticking a fork in my eye.

Alison Lockley I agree - I think Anne Patchett is an amazing writer, but most of this storyline is sentimental twiddle. It was boring and pointless.

Marcie Slowest book I’ve ever read, and I’m a big Anne Patchett fan.

Dana Monroe Longest (well written!) 300 pages ive read in a long time

G. I love Patchett’s writing and love Meryl Streep’s narration, but the story did not hold my attention. I kept falling asleep and having to rewind.

Brett Kluetz Totally agree! I love Anne Patchett’s writing and the narration. I kept hoping it would get better. It just went on and on. I didn’t care about the characters either. However, I did like the fact that she was telling a story to her daughters and that she wound up marrying a kind and grounded man. It also had a good message about what really matters, but I forced myself to get through it and I too, kept falling asleep!

Kayla I completely agree. I just couldn't get into this book.

Donna Wirta I was also bored. I wanted to love it but it was just ok

Peggy Kohler I agree with Constance (above comment)!!! Finally another honest review. I stopped reading it because it was slow, confusing and ABSOLUTELY boring!!!! Before I stick a fork in my eye I’m done!

Terrie Robinson I struggled with this one, too, Melanie. Great review.

message 13: by Lis (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lis Pearson I really liked it, honestly, I am sorry you all didn’t. Onwards!

Lisa Meyenn Completely agree. I am currently reading it and began searching for reviews to find other who feel the same as I do. I’m struggling to care about the storyline. Finding it slow moving.

Willow Nye “Confidently woven narrative is a great way to describe this book. I think I would read those “confident parts and be like ?? So?? I was suppose to care about that? Like you, I was never hooked and had little interest in Lara’s story.

Susie I’m half way through the book. I agree with your review. I’ll finish it …it’s for my book club but I’m not interested at all about the characters or the story line. I’ll keep reading, hoping the story gets better.

Francesca Bacardi I’m only about halfway and feeling the exact same way. I think the writing is beautiful, but the three daughters are insufferable. I also have no vested interest in Lara’s story, but perhaps that will change in the second half, though I’m skeptical.

Windi Oh!!! Same! Reading for a book club and just so bored i cant ( wont) finish. Can soneone here recommend one of her books that IS good?
