I'll have to being with the cons because those took half of the story:

1. Kit - Kit is judgmental and nosey. I find it a bit hypocritical—her thoughts of Lenora and how certain she is that she’s the murderer even when the people around her aren’t (she sometimes volleys back and forth over it but you can definitely feel that Kit thinks she’s guilty). And while Kit is self-aware that she’s being hypocritical too, it comes off as insincere. Like, you’d think she’d understand more than anyone what Lenora was going through. She says that she does but thinks differently, and her reasons for thinking so don’t hold up anyway. Half the time, I feel like the fear comes from her own preconceived notions. Like, yeah, sure, murders took place in the mansion, but she knew this and she doesn’t even believe in ghosts.

2. Repetitive - If I have to read that darn rhyme one more time (At seventeen, Lenora Hope)…I don’t think there’s a chapter where this chant isn’t repeated. And it it’s just the chant. The writing is repetitive. The first 40% of the book is a repetition of Kit’s same old musing—her “hidden past with her mom, her relationship with her dad, and her judging Lenora but then pulling back and thinking she’s innocent for a second before becoming scared again and going back to judging her. In the beginning, I get it, you know, it introduces the character. But, at a certain point, it does nothing to move the plot forward. Lenora’s parts move the plot forward because it reveals the past, but Kit’s? I could have cut so many of her chapters down.

After the first half of the book, I almost didn’t care about the plot holes of that plot twist. I didn’t want to go through the mental gymnastics of it all and just accepted the story for what it was. I also didn’t have the strength to chastise Kit’s many, many frustratingly harebrained actions. It's entertaining once the book picked up pace, but mostly, it's because I just went with the flow.
