it was amazing
bookshelves: brilliance, genius

Knut Hamsun takes the idea of a starving writer to the extreme in this novel about a ... well, about a starving writer. I read this almost a decade ago and forgot about it until recently when I found it again. What happens to the character is tragic, and like most tragic things in life funny at first until you realise how serious it is. The book is heartfelt, as if the author suffered himself and I found some of it surprisingly disturbing. Really felt for the guy towards the end when things became really desperate. Maybe it's because I could identify somewhat, having been homeless and finding myself in a similar situation, going hungry and sleeping on the street for longer than most humane societies would think acceptable. Anyway, the plot is pretty simple as the writer goes running around the town in a state of starvation induced delirium, but it kept me reading if only to see if he would overcome his plight. Although I'm sure I'd read it before, I'd forgotten most of it :)
