** spoiler alert ** With spoilers.

I listened to the audiobook read by Bahni Turpin. She’s an excellent reader which is why this has three stars instead of two. I felt this book could have better addressed the racial disparity and there were other things unaddressed. Like that abuse Patricia gets from her husband who as a psychiatrist threatens to keep her locked up. Then at the end he dictates that she gets neither house kn their divorce. Like he doesn’t get to choose that! She’ll have a divorce lawyer who would argue that since they have two houses, they would each get one I would think. Why did Ms Green not leave town to live with her grand kids? She says she doesn’t want to leave her church, but then at the end, she does leave town, so it’s like she was just kept there to be a convenient tool for the book club to use.

It touches on the racial disparity, but it’s pretty one dimensional. And the women characters are also on dimensional. It’s like the author doesn’t know how women think. However that said, Turpin made the book fairly enjoyable to listen to.

Edited to add: there were reviews that mentioned that the book covers the racial disparity really well but it doesn’t, and that’s why I’m more disappointed. Also I see a lot of reviews saying that the vampire symbolizes how the white man drains society and stuff and I can see that’s maybe what he intended, but I think he failed at making a successful social commentary and he failed at writing an effective thriller. It was okay but would have been better if he had focused on one or the other.
