DNF, after 200+ pages
Unfunny Portlandia meets Brave New World meets The Corrections, and then that combination never goes anywhere. I guess characters are developed, but the structure is a complete mess, so we don't know what is happening -- if anything actually is. This seems a repository for the author's commentary on a whole host of societal problems and obsessions we are experiencing. It is so overwritten. So many words! I was reading the first sentence of every paragraph, and I still totally followed the story (or whatever you want to call it, not really a story). From what I've read so far, I would've begun the novel with the section called The Unraveling -- because it tells us what we need to know about Elizabeth, Jack and Toby, and there is actual action that takes place (granted, in the space of 30 minute and inside of a grocery store, is all). Where are the editors for structure and verbosity? I actually found a mistake -- a conversation taking place between Brandie and Kate, in which both quotes are attributed to Brandie, instead of one quote to Brandie and one to Kate. Even the editors can't read every word of this book.
I don't get the love for this book AT ALL. I'm not a book quitter, but I feel relieved to not have to work so hard at trying to finish a book, now that I've put this one aside.
