** spoiler alert ** While it was a slow read for me I think the topics explored here are able to be explained and understood by middle schoolers. The reason scene can allow for a good conversation. I also have come across people not liking the ending because three main characters dies and you say that's heavy and inappropriate for middle schoolers. I wholeheartedly disagree. Our children, at least in the USA, face school shootings. We as a country expect them to put up with that senseless violence. It's in the back of their minds. If they are expected to handle that they can handle this ending. Also think back to other children's literature, people do not shy away from death. While it's sad that Clara died its sweet and nice that she at least got to say goodbye.
