** spoiler alert **
My god. “You are the dead
Recently i have been making a note to buy and read banned books. With 1984, I won’t lie, I wasn’t expecting to enjoy it. I have heard people my entire life complain about the US government, comparing it as such to big brother (which by doing so one misses the entire point of the book). So I was expecting some corny, mid dystopian that would probably put me to sleep at best. Dystopians usually aren’t my thing anyways but I figured I’d give a chance anyways. And I am so glad I did.
This books truly keeps you on your toes once you get to the middle of it. The boring is a little mundane, but I think it depicts well the mundaness of these characters lives, and sets us up well for description.
I’ve seen other people say that the characters are boring and in the beginning sure, but Winston really grows as a character and honestly so does Julie.
Once Julie comes into the picture with her note, it takes a huge turn!! Their relationship blossoming, finding places to meet etc. From there on it only becomes more exciting.
I will say however, the only part I found myself getting bored was where Winston reads The Book. It’s a little exhaustive imo but if you’re realllllly interested in the background lore and such, and having a hard time piecing it together, you may find it useful.
The ending I was not expecting at all. Room 101, finally betraying Julie, losing teeth, rats, everything. I think Orwell does a fantastic job at depicting falling into insanity, the last line being “he loved big brother. It’s chill inducing. If his other work is this good, I can’t wait to add it all to the library.
