liked it

I have not read The Mill on the Floss by George Elliott, but I sense it has greatly influenced this book much as The Hours was greatly influenced by Mrs. Dalloway. I have loved Mrs. Dalloway, and also really liked The Hours, so was very much looking forward to Day. This book left me intrigued enough to want to read The Mill on the Floss and I also listened to Brahm’s Requiem (which was exquisite) and I’m sure I’ll revisit it. So, those are good outcomes.

I’m disappointed to not love this more. I checked the age of Michael Cunningham and he is 71. That was interesting to me because this story’s characters are all in the near neighborhood of 40 and are quite engaged in figuring out their professional and romantic lives - without much success it seems and with quite a lot of angst.

I worry sometimes when I read fiction about millennials. Could so many of them really be so confused and disillusioned about relationships? The rise of “gender fluid and “sexual orientation fluid and equality and equal division of labor seems not to have made anything easier for marriage.
