it was amazing

This book really moved and engaged me. Perhaps because I was listening to the audiobook on an unexpected day home from work, so I had the luxury of really connecting with it. But the way that the story is told is as if you’re sitting down on a couch as someone is telling you their story, in all its rawness, beauty and pain.

Lucy and Gabe are in university in New York City but haven’t really interacted in their class together. On 9/11 they are drawn together and experience the day together. They are both heartbroken, but also motivated to find meaning in their lives. Over the next thirteen years their relationship and friendship will go through many changes, other people will enter their lives, but there is still an invisible string connecting them.

I loved the exploration of the different types of love that can come into our lives. A friend of Lucy’s compares love to fire a forest fire that consumes you, a hearth fire that warms you and gives you comfort, etc. The story of Lucy and Gabe, and the people around them, is very thought provoking. I didn’t even realize there was a sequel! Though I’m glad it doesn’t publish for a few months, because my heart isn’t ready to move on yet it needs to sit with these characters and their story for a while before moving forward 💔
