Gordon Korman is one of my favorite middle school authors, and this one did not disappoint.
I particularly enjoy his using 2, sometimes more, character voices to tell the story.
Also this one was written after Covid, which becomes part of the story.
Reef and Theo live in the same city, but in different areas, go to different schools and have different family lives.
When they meet, Reef wants nothing to do with Theo, but due to an inexplicable condition they both seem to be "suffering" from, he has no choice but to associate with Theo.
They come to terms with the unexplainable in a most unusual way, and find that they will continue to need to support each other as their life journey continues.
