I recommended this book to my book club and was initially excited to read this book from the description and reviews. However, after reading a few pages, I felt no connection to any of the characters and felt like it was not cohesive. It felt as if no editor read Zhang's book before it went to print. It's weird, but not in a good way, and was painfully slow because there was no motivation to keep reading. I pushed my way through since I recommended it and was the host of the book club meeting and felt optimistic that perhaps one of the members would have differed in opinion. Nope. Every single member felt the same and the majority weren't able to finish it and did not mind that we spoiled the ending. Overall, I would not recommend this book and have no idea why it's a best seller.
