Absolutely breathtaking.

There was a moment when I slipped out of the novel and saw all the allusions to other fantasy novels - specifically those of Pullman - and occasionally I wanted the naming of all the impossible creatures to ease off BUT the writing was pretty much the best writing I have read for a while and by the end I was crying.

The characters are beautifully formed and the ending is stunning.

I highly recommend the audio version of this novel read by Samuel West.

Six stars for me. And a lot of Christmas presents sorted.

I appear to have read this twice according to GoodReads - the second time in 8 minutes. I am a fast reader but not that fast. And I loved it but also not so much as to reread the minute I finished it! Can’t delete the second reading.
