The Chill (Lew Archer, #11)

The Chill, like other Ross MacDonald novels I have read, requires the protagonist, Lew Archer, to dwell deeply into the past to solve a recent crime. Through his tenacity, Archer ties together three seemingly unrelated murders occurring twenty years and half a continent apart. The story starts with a young bridegroom retaining Archer to find his runaway bride, who left their honeymoon hotel only hours after their wedding after having encountered a mysterious bearded man. Archer quickly finds the bride, but she is suffering severe mental distress, claiming she killed her mother ten years earlier. MacDonald brings forth real emotion in his characters and the reader of his works feels he or she is part of the story. Although The Chill was first published in 1964, it is a story that stands the test of time. I have read several of MacDonald’s books (and watched the filming of one), and plan to read many more. Easy five stars.
