Ami (Guardians of Dawn, #2)

3.5/5
Tonally I enjoyed this more than the first---it feels like it takes itself a bit more seriously. I quite enjoyed the prose and worldbuilding, though I feel this world would benefit for a map (and that's not something I'd say about most YA fantasy novels).
Now, for my one big gripe with this book.
Ami is just...well, Ami. Mizuno. From Sailor Moon. Shy, booksmart, outcast with short hair and glasses. She's just got a different element. Zhara and Yuli feel like their own unique characters, but Ami, well.... The name says it all.
I do also wish authors would write autistic rep that isn't "super-quiet booksmart girl who can't read social cues." I think this book did it...fine, but 9/10 times it seems to fall back on that trope.
Overall, I think the book was fun and did what it set out to do. I'm very interested in how Jae-Jones is going to tackle the Usagi/Princess Serenity factor, since the story is sticking very close to its Sailor Moon roots.
