I cannot describe how drastically downhill this book went for me after the “big reveal��.

So much so I can’t bring myself to fully finish this book. I think I’m DNFing it with less than 90% left. I have never done that.

How did it all go so wrong? Well, you see I started what I expected to be my favourite book this fall, one I had been anticipating reading since the summer. It was going well. I found it easy to get into and the characters easy to keep track of. The transition between current day and the past was a bit annoying. Then the murders started. To begin with I was into it. I loved the poems and the family dynamic and I quickly found myself developing a theory for what I anticipated the big reveal to be. Frankly, I think my solution was leaps and bounds above the actual one. As the story dragged on I found myself losing some interest and wanting to skip just to see if my theory was correct. When the actual solution was revealed I actually turned the audiobook off. I found it so silly and disappointing I gave up. It felt like it was used for shock value rather than a strong or conclusive reasoning.

What could’ve been a story about a difficult and divisive family forced to face the consequences of their actions was instead a thriller with an abysmal ending that left me wishing you could physically throw an audiobook across the room.
