Put the pitch forks down please. I know, Gatsby is the best and I'm just silly.

Look the English major part of me gives the book a 5- hands down. You win Fitzgerald, this was a great book.

However the part of me that likes to read books for fun is not as enthused. I genuinely like and enjoyed this book. The plot- great, the pacing- great. However the characters- that is where I had slight issues. As a device the characters a great, once again English major me is praising the grounds that all of the characters walk on in terms of complexity and nuance. It is my investment though that lacks. I don't care about any of them. I don't care about Nick, I don't care about Daisy, I don't care about Jordan. The only character I am semi-rooting for is Gatsby, but even he to a certain point is just not someone I would root for. As a reader I don't root for any of these characters, and for me takes a bit of enjoyment out of the read because I want to care about the characters, I want to be heartbroken, I want to root or not root for them. I don't care if "oh, well you're supposed to not like any of them, that is the genius of the book." Too bad. This is how I feel and I cannot help it.

Overall it is a 3.5, maybe with a reread and further appreciation a 4.
