This book had some really cool bits and pieces about the spirituality and desolation found in the geography of South Dakota. However, i found those bits were wrapped in a thick layer of condescension and prejudicial judgement. I did not enjoy reading this book because I bristled at her tone so many times. She seemed to generalize about the people who made that space their home.

Ed Funny I wonder if there is another book of this title and author as I just finished the book and struggle to find one line of condescension or prejudicial judgement. I thought she clearly loved the Dakotas and the people and made me want to visit (along with a friend who just stayed there on her family's farm) Sorry you had a bad experience with this book, though long ago.

Kerrie Hoar I agree Joanna. I was wondering how her book was received by her community and why she stayed in a community that she clearly had a love/hate relationship with for 30 years.

Curtis I've lived in South Dakota for 27 years and I get it. Norris is right on, there is great self-reliance, community dedication, but also massive prejudice and provincialism. I find her take so accurate it hurts.
