it was ok

Unfortunately I was disappointed by this novel. I have read Jensen's Malediction books a long time ago and enjoyed them. A Fate Inked in Blood had some positives, but mainly negatives in my view.

I loved the use of Norse mythology and the world this was set in. I hope future installments develop the world and the role of the gods/goddesses further and the plot does become more complex. As it stands, I felt the twists in this story were VERY predictable. Furthermore, the pacing was very off. I did not feel engaged in the story and there were points I wondered if I was going to continue read. However, the story does end on a more interesting note (I was engaged more in the ending than the entirety of the whole book) and I see the potential this series has. I do like Jensen's writing generally so I hope the series can improve.

My other issue with this story was Freya. Her narration drove me a bit crazy. I did not like her character at all, and feel she had barely any growth throughout the novel. She felt very passive (not as "strong" as the novel claims at all), naive, senseless, beyond easily manipulated and frankly kind of flat. I could not find any redeeming qualities about her. I liked Bjorn, the love interest, more. He was definitely the voice of reason in this novel and frankly the only likeable character. I think he will be further developed in future installments which will be nice to see. I am excited to see his past delved into more. I think the romance will also require more development. I liked the flirting/banter at the beginning but feel it dwindled down throughout the story, becoming more insta-love. I do admit though that the smut was still well written.

Overall, the more I think of it, the more disappointed I am in A Fate Inked in Blood. I hope the rest of the series improves, but I am definitely going to go in with lower expectations and may not continue the series if it is like the first installment.
