This was a pretty miserable reading experience for me personally. I LOVED the concept. I loved that there were different kinds of bots and Annie was struggling the whole time with finding her identity and learning to code keeping a secret, but pretty much up until the last chapter it was just difficult to read such a clear story of emotional and physical abuse when you’re in the mind of the sex robot with the body of a 24 year old, the life experience of a 2 year old, and the brain of a genius who thinks everything is her fault because that’s what she’s programmed the think and what’s reinforced in her life by her owners and creators.
I loved the chapter where she and Delta escaped, I loved the very last chapter where Doug finally sets her free and she just leaves without a plan, but I feel like I wanted that two chapters ago and more content of her taking advantage of her freedom because the rest of it kind of read as torture porn sometimes (IN MY OPINION). The chapters about her being grounded and locked in the closet, the sexual abuse and manipulation, the whole therapy timeline were quite difficult to read and also didn’t even have particularly compelling dialogue to me.
I don’t normally rate books poorly but I think I had really high expectations for this book and it kind of read as a lifetime movie to me which just wasn’t my cup of tea. I still ripped through it over two short plane rides. Happy new year.

"Okay, so the story is really good and interesting and well paced, I can’t put it down, but I kinda feel like it’s written at a 6th grade reading level and it’s making me feel like I’m reading a YA novel."
