it was amazing

** spoiler alert ** Oh that book was delicious.
First of all, I was SO impressed when I read in the acknowledgements that Raven Kennedy wrote this postpartum. Well done!! Also to her village, and to the decision to extend the deadline. Still, what a feat.

What I love most about Raven Kennedy’s writing style is that she has sufficient (not over the top) complexity in the plot line, but then goes all out on the main character’s feelings. In a way that is very relatable, and in this book I particularly there’s a lot of personal growth, new friendships, and oddly, some interesting relationship dynamics despite Slade and Auren not even meeting once in the book!

I agree with other reviewers that the one spice scene, while hot, was in an odd place (the timing I can get on board with), and I also wonder why Lord Cull didn’t just break some necks.

I really did appreciate the pace of the book. There was time to truly discover magical Anwynn and though Auren’s eyes, and I like that the series will go one book further. The end was incredibly fast paced and like a lot to bear with everything happening all at once and characters being drained- and I do wonder if the author’s experience of having to small children helped her make that come to life beautifully. It definitely leaves me gasping and eager for the next book. Through if that deadline gets extended again to make another book as fine as this- go for it!

ps Bathhouse trope with a friend (and no sex) instead of a love interest?! Nice twist!!
