this was such a fascinating character study that examines womanhood, autonomy, control, and emotionally abusive relationships. it reminded me of my first relationship where i lacked a sense of identity, received criticism when i showed humanity, and had a constant fear of displeasing him. big oof.

Megan Davis I just finished this today, too. Annie was a heavily relatable character. This was a good read.

Martha Only two chapters in, and I'm struggling.
Roland is creepy and manipulative, while Doug-Annie's "partner"-is probably going to go full-on abusive.
Annie is close enough to a real woman to make what she is experiencing on her end feel very much like a woman in an abusive relationship.
Not what I need to read right now, when real women and their very legitimate issues are being trashed as if they were chattel (that's an old timey term that means "property that is not REAL property"-meaning land)...
I need escapism right now, and this book is not it...

Megan Jordan Well put.
