The Book Thief

This book was a heart-wrenching story, beautifully and carefully realized by Markus Zusak. Every character was memorable; indeed, because Zusak calls the reader's attention to words and definitions, every WORD was memorable. He is very deliberate in his usage of words--for example, the word "loathsome" only appeared twice in the whole book, and I know that because the first time, the Book Thief was told to look it up in her dictionary.
Fascinating writing, but unbelievably depressing. Of course, I don't imagine it's easy to write a story about WWII Germany without it being depressing. This one certainly had its uplifting moments, and the ending wasn't as shocking as it would have been if the narrator hadn't given us glimpses into the future throughout the book. Very unusual storytelling method. I highly recommend it.
