This book was a perfect read for me. Why? Well, I signed up for a Gate One tour of Australia. My husband had loved Bill Bryson, but I’d not been drawn to his works (though many I know have enjoyed and recommended his works).
My first thoughts as I began this book was, “It’s going to be a spoof; a tongue in cheek treatise on Australia Well, I was wrong about Bryson’s presentation of this HUGE country/continent! I quickly realized the accurate grasp of information of his personal experiences presented concisely AND, yes, with humor, just the information I needed as a prospective (and participating) visitor. It had a mixture of interesting history, personal reactions to places visited, and his witty observations that spoke to me. I read it before I embarked on the journey, and continued while traveling! There was a perfect synchronicity of chapters with places visited! I almost followed his travels, literally (but without experiencing the wicked treacheries spoken about, like snakes, spiders, alligators, box jellies, etc.)! It was a bulky, heavy companion to carry along (I was way overpacked), but well worth carrying, and ended up being given to my tour guide, Susan Rees. A perfect ending!
