it was amazing

If you’re looking for a book that uses an intimate, funny, but also deeply moving approach to unveil the intricate and complex dynamics between a mother and a daughter, this is it.

Divine Secreta if the Ya-Ya Sisterhood masterfully unpacks generational trauma to reveal the person behind the parent. Set in 1960s Louisiana, the reader finds a new friend group in characters who are uniquely chiseled out to be their own quirky individuals. Each of these women are friends for life and become mothers of children who are also friends for life. With the husbands and fathers gone, all the girls are bound to be in each other’s business.

Set during post-segregation times, this book also touches upon topics of racism, the boredom and lost potential of coked up housewives and the silent but oh-so present glooming depression that comes with being a wife and mother in this generation. It is a truly well-rounded (and in my opinion heavily underrated) novel that will keep you engaged all the way through. Enjoy the rollercoaster ride!
