it was ok
bookshelves: just-plain-weird, avoid-at-all-costs, crap

A friend suggested I read this one. Turns out, despite its popularity, its terrible Really, really, terrible. Let me explain.
The writing style feels stiff, but thats not my only complaint. There are several plot holes, inconsistencies, and things that just don't add up. My biggest complaint is why does Jonas act and think like us, while being brought up in a culture where Communistic like control is the norm. Wouldn't he think and act like them, if everybody else is like that? We're talkin hundreds of years of this culture being maintained, and somehow Jonas acts like he does despite the fact that NOBODY acts like that in his world.
And lets just be honest, the ending sucks. The whole book builds up to that moment, and Lowry lets us down sooo bad.
The only reason I gave this two stars is because of some of the amazing, beautiful descriptions Lowry gives us when The Giver transfers his memories to Jonas. The only spots where Lowry succeeds.
And it so happens that the friend who suggested this book also happens to be a huge fan of Ayn Rand. *facepalm*
