When young Ivan/Vanya/Itzak stumbles upon a mysterious circle of leaves in his youth, he immediately turns and runs for the house, but years later, in America, educated, and betrothed to an American woman (Ruthie), he still is drawn to that mysterious place where leaves circle and spin at your lightest touch. What he finds there in that magical place/time//experience is (among many other things, but more importantly) himself.
