This book is the story of airmen who had extremely dangerous bombing missions over a tiny island where Japan had communications equipment during WWII. Stories of the men's childhood and teen years pre-WWII help you feel closer to knowing about each young man.
The historical background of the fierce Japanese warriors and how things came to such a horrific end for so many is fully explored. There is much to learn that helps us see how young Japanese boys were taught to have strict obedience to their Military overlords without question and to see their lives as of no or little value. The overcrowded conditions in Japan and the hideous ways in which they tried to solve it gained the world's disapproval except for Germany, who craved support from others.
I liked the fact the author also gave us details of how Americans expanded and some of their evil deeds in doing so as well. However, many people living in countries are not guilty of what a few leaders and military do. Good and evil live side by side the world over.
After being captured, the Americans may have expected to be held prisoner until the end of the War, but the story that follows the actions of a few truly evil leaders is so gruesome, it's hard to believe how horrible some humans can be. I was determined to read the whole book as a kind of memorial and a salute to these young and gifted airmen who gave all so the world could become once again free. Hats off to James D. Bradley who did right by these brave Americans.
