did not like it

did not enjoy

I disliked the central character Julia so much that I never enjoyed the book. I tried—I soldiered through the book because I did enjoy The Most Fun We Ever Had by this author—but for me it was so depressing and frustrating to read about Julia that for only the second time in my life I cannot leave a positive review.

Julie Downie I'm reading it now and I agree! I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way!

Michelle Agree. 100 pag3s in and strongly considering a DNF. So disappointed because "Most Fun I Ever Had" was a 5 star read for me.

Pamela Huffman I felt the same way but when I looked at it through the lens of intergenerational trauma, I felt compassion for unlikable Julia. She was unlikable for sure but it was because of Anita’s parenting or lack thereof. And Julia ultimately was able to parent her children better than she was parented which was wonderful to see. But it wasn’t a fake “everything’s all better scenario. Instead, the author was able to paint a realistic portrait of a traumatized mother striving to do better by her family and falling short sometimes.

Jane I wanted to love it but I just couldn’t. It was hard to keep going. I did like the ending though.

Amy I wanted to love it too! I loved her first book. It’s too long for one thing. And I just did not like Julia. But by the end I did have a softening for her. Not every family is perfect and it’s good to read about other families ups and downs.

Susan Scott I am trying VERY hard to not quit this book! I am finding it a bit tedious and a lot depressing! The characters are not at all likeable and the whole theme seems to me very whiney and self indulgent. I haven’t read any other of this author’s works-sorry to say that based on this one I probably won’t be looking for others!

Elisabeth 300 pages in and I just don’t care! Thank you for confirming my thoughts on this book.

Virginia I was going to write in my review but you said it. I didn’t even finish.

Ann Richards-Farnsworth I completely agree. Julia was well defined as a character but so unlikeable it detracted from the story. Same with her mother, unlikable

Margot I’m 4 hours into the 18 hour audiobook and just don’t think I can finish it. It’s going nowhere fast. Really wanted to like it but just can’t engage.

Sabrina Woe for word agree

Jackie L Agree. I'm sorry I pushed through to the end. Not worth it.

Tracy Litchfield Glad to find some common ground. I finished it but the whole time I disliked the main character so very much it was making it very difficult to read. I felt no sense of wanting to root for her as the protagonist. This book was on a few best of lists as a recommendation but not a fan.

Jessica Julia was definitely not a likable character. It didn't bother me though because I think that was kind of the point... She didn't see herself as likable, her own mother didn't even like her, why would Mark stick around?

Sunshine I completely agree with you, I'm trudging through it. The main character is insufferable and the union with her husband is so unlikely and hard to buy. Two key things in a domestic drama. I did enjoy her previous book though...
