Sometimes you pick books because someone has recommended them to you, other times perhaps you find the plot interesting or if you’re someone like me then you might have found the cover attractive. However, picking this book wasn’t because of any of the above-mentioned reasons. It was simply because Satyajit Ray wrote it. I know very little about Mr Ray apart from the fact that he is an immensely talented filmmaker from West Bengal. I even tried watching one of his films but couldn’t finish it for some reason. Back to the book, I didn’t know that Mr. Ray has written books so I immediately picked it up. And boy, it didn't disappoint. So, Murder mysteries have been my thing from the start of my reading journey regardless this book wasn’t one while at the same time it was. It had the Agatha Christie-sque setting in it, a remote place near the Terai. Makes you turn your pages. The characters are pretty well written. It keeps you hanging on your toes to know what's following, typically what mysteries are meant to do. The climax is what makes a film or book a yay or nay. The ending to this book was something in between those. It’s a short book a novella actually just 100 pages, a two-hour read (provided you are not a procrastinator like me). Was sure of rating it a five till the second last chapter. But a solid 4.5/5 read for me. Enjoyed it thoroughly. Would love to read more of Ray’s works.
