Story #3 discussed in George Saunders' A Swim in a Pond in the Rain: In Which Four Russians Give a Master Class on Writing, Reading, and Life.
“How terrible it is not to have any opinions!
Beware the ŷ description of this story--there’s a lot of conjecture about Chekhov’s beliefs about women that I wouldn’t trust! The story merely shows us a woman named Olenka who has a tendency to become the person she loves. We see her in multiple relationships, and each one gives us a little more info about Olenka.
I didn’t find a lot to love about the story, but Saunders analysis was fascinating, and frankly, without it I would have struggled to understand the meaning.
