Read 3 times. Last read October 20, 2009.
Finished my third reading just in time for f2f discussion. While not quite as immersed in the book as on past readings, probably because I had to read against the clock to finish, I still thoroughly enjoyed it. The whole group also felt it was a worthwhile read and we had one of the liveliest and best discussions ever. One person could not quite grasp the whole animals/Animals concept and that hung her up for some reason. I have always liked fiction with a fantasy/s-f edge to it so I find it easy to buy into a world where things are a little stranger than ours and Maguire built a world I really enjoyed being in. Complex, colorful, mythic. Wonderful use of language.
I liked the jumps in time between sections which many people find irritating. I don't mind having to let my own imagination try to fill in the blanks and I generally have faith that the author will make clear anything important to the story or characters eventually. I don't need clear linear progression- I like a puzzle.
Sad to say, the sequels have utterly failed to come up to Wicked in my estimation. Lion was marginally better than Son, however. It was still enjoyable to revisit that Oz and fit a few more pieces into the overall puzzle. Hope he keeps writing in that world.
