** spoiler alert **
I understand why people love this book.
I hated it while still enjoying Klune’s excellent writing.
We follow Gordo, who has been abandoned and left behind so many times that he just keeps himself detached and acts like a jerk. We see the Bennett pack again, who has wronged Gordo over and over and over and has never really apologized. And we see Mark Bennett, who just follows the pack and whose half assed apologies ring incredibly insincere under the milquetoast guise of “my Alpha told me to.
So I pretty much hated all of the characters except for supporting cast: the band of humans, who I adore, and Ox, who had no part in the long litany of hurt the Bennetts caused Gordo, and the witches who show up to help.
And then there was the story. There were some pretty weak holes in the story, which is unusual for Klune. (view spoiler)
Where Wolfsong is a comfort read of packpackpack, this book is all blue and red and angry and unjust and hurthurthurt. Good for those who like to be sad. Also, the plot was so plodding that it took twice as many pages as necessary to tell the story.
