it was amazing

Kushner has created a character that is a joy to despise and revile. This often makes a book difficult to like but I think she has nailed it. Sadie, while despicable, is intelligent and determined.
This is about us as humans and how we choose to look at the exploitation of the planet, lead our own lives and judge the choices others make. Throughout time people have looked to make changes to their environment and the way they live their lives. The character of Bruno explores this through his email meditations on his attempts to embrace a simpler life style and his examination of early human civilisations like the Neanderthal. It is only toward the end of the novel that his thoughts begin to diverge from his initial thesis and Sadie is pulled along in his wake. She seems to waiver on what has simply been a job to execute and she attempts to muffle her inner thinking with alcohol and discipline. I like that she is not simply won over by Bruno’s thinking, life is never that simple.
Trying to identify who is in the “right and who is in the “wrong is no simple task in this novel. The eco warriors, government and unknown private actors all have different agendas and this definitely made me think about how and who we can trust. I think this novel is the strongest of the 4 I’ve read in the Booker shortlist.
I’m intrigued.
