A Discovery of Witches (All Souls, #1)

On the surface, this sounds intriguing. A historian/professor finds a mysterious manuscript seemingly desired by all other magical creatures, many of whom will stop at nothing to get it. At first, I enjoyed this part of the book. Then the vampire boyfriend came along. Look, I’m not inherently opposed to a romance in a book like this, but in this case it’s so poorly executed. The protagonist goes from a strong, independent scholar to a hyper-codependent shell of her former self. That’s lazy writing! The book is 600 pages long, and somehow it ends on a cliffhanger and without feeling like a complete book. I don’t like to ascribe rigid rules to how books or series should be formatted, but I do think you’re doing your reader a huge disservice by introducing a half a dozen (or more) major plot lines, poorly developing them throughout the book, and then ending with basically nothing resolved. Again, it’s lazy writing and especially editing.
As you can imagine, this is one I struggle to recommend, especially a decade+ after its release.
