Outdated by 3D printing, but still a fun and useful read. Could cover details like how to best finish the bottom of a base (I guess blank cardboard is fine.) and make the spray paint on polystyrene warning on page 15 more prominent. Do all sprays contain acetone or similar polystyrene-dissolving solvents? No, but according to Mike Wuerth on Quora, these solvents DID eat into the Styrofoam cup: acetone; methyl ethyl ketone (MEK at the hardware store); dimethylformamide; benzene (caution: carcinogenic); toluene; 1,1,1-trichoroethane. These solvents had NO visible effect on the cup: methyl tertiary butyl ether (a gasoline additive); mineral spirits (AKA “white spirit� or generic paint thinner); turpentine; naphtha (which may mean different things in different countries).
According to Reddit's TerrainBuilding forum, precoating with water/PVA glue, or as the book mentions: filler, should seal/protect the foam from can solvents. An airbrush should be fine as well. Just use a test piece to make sure.
