really liked it
bookshelves: brit-lit, dysfunctional-family, hilarious, mysterious

I really enjoyed the first few Jackson Brodie books (and the BBC series with Jason Isaacs, who makes Jackson very tortured & sexy), but got bogged down with Started Early, Took My Dog and couldn't connect at all with Big Sky. Kate Atkinson redeemed herself (in my eyes) with this sixth book that features art heists! a murder mystery night! references to Monsieur Poirot and books for a fictitious Christie-esque author! an aristocratic family that has lost most of their fortune, but none of their snobbery! and Reggie! (Lots of Reggie, and even a little Louise.)

This book is just so much fun. The cast of characters includes a vicar who's lost his faith and his voice, a physically and emotionally wounded veteran, and the Milton family, especially Lady Milton who still refers to her employees as servants and doesn't much like her own children. I'm just going to let the book blurb finish my sales pitch:

"As paying guests, impecunious aristocrats and old friends collide, we are treated to Atkinson's most charming and fiendishly clever mystery yet, one that pays homage to the masters of the genre -- from Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers to the modern era of Knives Out and Only Murders in the Building."

One warning: be prepared to meet a lot of different characters and to not actually get around to the murder mystery night until the last third of the book. For me, the journey itself was enjoyable and the hijinks were worth waiting for.

Prompt #2: A book you want to read based on the last sentence

Last paragraph (which doesn't actually spoil anything): (view spoiler)

To be completely honest, this book was already on my TBR before I decided to do the PSRC & it didn't fit into any of the other categories. But I did read the last line first and it made me want to read it (more)?
