I have mixed feelings about Diavola. I enjoyed Jennifer Thorne's Lute so I had high hopes for this one, and the first two thirds was great. But the last third really dragged. I even considered not finishing at one point.
I did finish though and I liked the end.
I didn't like Anna the protagonist or her family. But more than that, the characters didn't ring true to me. (view spoiler)[The family never changed or evolved throughout the book. They started terrible and ended terrible and felt extremely one-note. Anna never sticking up for herself or pointing out their lies and pettiness also felt contrived to me. She wasn't a browbeaten woman. She wasn't oppressed. She was strong, had plenty of self-esteem and was an accomplished thirty-something. Yet she played the martyr and let her family use her as a punching bag. I understood at first, she didn't want to make waves... but after a while she felt more like a caricature than a person. Three stars for me. There were great moments in this book and some not-so-great. I'm glad I read it but I would never read it again :)
