I've never been a big fan of books where there's a prominent character who's thoroughly unlikeable. It's even worse here, where we're seeing things through a male chauvinist character's annoying point of view. Why did no one warn me how triggering dad Frank, our first person POV character, would be?

I spent the first few chapters of The Last One at the Wedding thinking he's everything that's wrong with middle class men who ooze indignant entitlement, who wish we could go back to the "great" 1950s where their manly word is never questioned, where their scornful suspicions of everyone not exactly like them are treated like they hold water, and where appearances are so valuable no one's feelings should even be considered. I despised his old school character.

I actively and passionately hated The Last One at the Wedding. I can't even tell you if it was well-written or not, because I was too distracted by mister mansplainy manly man just being his scornful and snide self. It wasn't fun to hate him when he made comments like they're hiring women now too, because of that 'me too' stuff, or when he mistrusted every single person's intentions because only he knows better.

Does he happen to be right about a few things? Yeah, sure, but a story that relies on an Archie Bunker-styled character to solve a couple mysteries is absolutely a no go for me.

Jenny Bean Wow! It’s really amazing how differently ppl view things. I found his character quite amusing and just had bits and pieces when I was laughing uncontrollably because of some of his opinions. Everything doesn’t need to come with ‘trigger warnings (hate that stupid phrase). If you’re ‘triggered that easily I think you should spend your life in bed sucking your thumb. Seriously, the only thing that ‘triggers me anymore are ppl who are triggered so easily. Toughen up buttercup, if something triggers you, then that’s on you NOT anything external.

Megan I'm 170 pages in and I can't stand these characters!!! I kind of hate it right now....It feels like a teenager wrote it. However, I LOVED his fist book so I am going to finish it but at this point I don't have high hopes :(

Paige Drews I big time hated this book. For me..Frank was just…dumb dumb. So was Tammy. It felt like the author did zero research understanding the setting, and zero character development.
Man.
Worst book of the year, but like you…this one legit makes me angry. lol

Jen Ryland (jenrylandreviews & yaallday) lol I didn't hate his character, but just finished my review and I said the book had "bro vibes." It felt like a guy book with some pink washing? Wedding washing? I enjoyed it but also there was something about it that didn't fully gel for me either.

Max Hall I didn't find Frank a very likeable or relatable main character but I don't entirely agree with your views. I think he saw Maggie through rose tinted glasses. I was surprised when Tammy told it to him straight and basically explained that Maggie is a terrible person. It must be hard for parents (I don't have kids) to realise their pride and joy is a degenerate human being. The only characters that came off well in my eyes were Aidan, Gwen, Tammy and Abigail.

Leah Gordon frank was annoying as F***! from the very beginning

Claire Fiorella I lowkey feel like this is a reflection of the author? Maybe. Because I know he’s made (in his books) several comments that seriously piss me off w homophobia/ sexism/ racism/ ignorance. Why you he write that at all? I’m sorry but I hated this book too

Meredith Miller I really don’t know what book you read, but if I had any complaint about Frank, it was that he was too nice and two accepting of all of the horrible, murderous, selfish things she did. I in no way so anything in him that was a know it all kind of mail and believe me I’ve known many of them in person

Alex Goodwyn You nailed it !! Frank is an insufferable pompous blowhard, completely unlikable.

Yuliya I'm curious, why do you think Frank is a chauvinist? What has he said or done to make you think of him that way?

Swapna Gardner This is exactly how I read him too. Incredibly unlikeable, entitled boomer. For a time I was hoping it was satire, but it wasn't.

Renee Cassese I don’t see Frank as a male chauvinist, he just wants to protect his daughter. I think Tammy was horrible for not protecting her niece. And Maggie is not so much naive as she is a narcissistic mean entitled girl who should have listened to daddy
