Cleopatra and Frankenstein

I wanted to get my hands on Blue Sisters instead of this, but the local bookstore at my place only had Cleopatra and Frankenstein. So I decided to give it a shot since it's pretty popular among the book community on Instagram. Of course I had high hopes considering the positive reviews given by many others who have read. Unfortunately, it's not my cup of tea. I almost dnf my way through it but clung on to the hope that it gets better. Besides the gorgeous cover, this book was pretty underwhelming. I was having a hard time trying to go through various point of views from different characters. I understand that the book is trying to show the effects of Cleo and Frank's impulsive marriage towards the people around them. However, there are too many characters with their own stories which makes it messy and lacks depth. It did not come well together because it came to a point where it seemed unnecessary. I want to know more about Cleo and Frank than the other characters but instead it felt like the other characters were trying to be the spotlight, overstepping the main focus of the story. Some parts were disturbing, if you know you know. On the good side, Mellors' way of writing particularly the imagery she used was brilliant. It truly brought the setting and emotions to life. As a 20 something struggling to make something out of myself in this world, I was able to resonate with the struggles of some of the characters in the book. There were definitely parts that pulled a string in my heart. I particularly love Zoe's chapter with Cleo and Audrey because it melted me into a puddle of how I love being a woman. Overall, I'm giving this book 3.5/5.
